My WPG: Amanda Buhse

My WPG is a monthly series introducing you to awesome Winnipeggers who share our passion for community-building and localism. In the latest post, meet entrepreneur, graphic designer and co-founder of the sassiest candle company in the city, Amanda Buhse.

My story: I’m born and raised in Winnipeg. I went to Red River College and graduated from their Graphic Design and Advanced Graphic Design courses and have since been working in the industry for the last 12 years. I’ve worked in many different types of places within the design community, such as print houses, ad agencies and fashion houses.

Three years ago, my best friend Tom and I started Coal and Canary in my kitchen as an excuse to hang out more often. It was never meant to become a “business” and at the time, I wasn’t looking to leave my career as an art director at a national fashion brand. However, sometimes fate steps in and takes you where you never think you’ll go. Needless to say, one year after starting Coal and Canary I switched careers and started to pursue Coal and Canary full time and have never looked back. It’s been the most gratifying accident of my life.

My hood: I grew up in the south end of the city, and now reside in St. James with my husband for the last 10 years.

My go-to takeout: China City. Best dim sum and Chinese food in the city.

My ideal date night: That’s a tough one. I’d have to say April 25th. Because it’s not too hot, not too cold, all you need is a light jacket… KIDDING! I would say going to a local restaurant for dinner, then biking to Assiniboine Park (in the summer) to check out the free local entertainment at the Lyric Theatre.

My guilty pleasure: Miss Vickie’s chips and white wine. If you haven’t tried it, we can’t be friends.

My favourite patio: I don’t like patios, actually.

My favourite coffee shopFools + Horses. The best.

My favourite brunch spot: This one’s easy. Definitely Cibo Waterfront.

My favourite event: The Hub parties in the summer on the rooftop patio of the Met. OK, maybe I do like patios.

My best-kept secret: I love Bruce Park near Assiniboine Park. It’s a quiet little park along the river and it’s so beautiful in the summer.

My ideal day off: Thermea. With wine, of course.

My favourite local band: I can’t choose just one. Attica Riots, Mise en Scene and Royal Canoe, of course.

My favourite splurge: A salon day at Essentique on Academy, or dinner at Oxbow.

My favourite place to take out of towners: The Forks.

Best bang for my buck: The Burger Place on Portage Avenue.

One place I can’t walk into without buying something: Mad About Style Boutique.

My favourite day trip or weekend away: Going to our cabin at Brereton Lake in the Whiteshell.

One thing I want everyone to know about Winnipeg: Winnipeg is one of the most amazing places to live and start a business. Everyone is so supportive and Winnipeggers absolutely love shopping local unlike anyone else in the country. We’re so lucky to live in a place that has such a diverse mix of art, culture and commerce. I like to call Winnipeg the biggest small town; everyone knows everyone and there’s always something fun to do, and I’m so proud to call it my home.
