We Heart Handmade: Black Market Ice Cream
As if giving Winnipeg the most mind-blowing handmade ice pops wasn’t enough, the amazing people behind Pop Cart decided to bless us with an exquisite assortment of artisanal ice cream creations as well.
Since launching in 2017, Black Market Ice Cream has been serving up small-batch ice cream (available in pints and single-serve cups) made with fresh ingredients, handmade sauces and a whole lotta love. And they just so happen to have the most fun and unique flavours you’ll find anywhere in the city.
We’re talking gourmet combinations like Blueberry Lavender Frozen Yogurt and Blood Orange Sherbet With Olive Oil & Dark Chocolate alongside nostalgic goodness like Buttered Toast With Strawberry Jam, Rice Krispie Square and Glazed Donut. Adding to the nostalgia, their mini cups even come with those paper-wrapped little wooden spoons we grew up on.
In the latest edition of We Heart Handmade, Angela Farkas and Alana Fiks of Black Market Ice Cream share the story behind their shop’s name, their favourite flavour and more.
What’s the story behind your shop’s name?
When we decided to start test-marketing ice cream, we knew that we would only be able to sell it out of the “Pop Cart” carts, and we weren’t really going to advertise that we had it. So it was kind of like we would be selling ice cream “underground,” or on the black market, hence the name!
What’s the most favourite thing you’ve made and why?
Our “Thai-Phoon” ice cream is our favourite. It’s made with so many tasty ingredients like coconut milk, lemongrass, ginger, lime, and it has chunks of chewy dried mango and crystallized ginger in it. It borders on tasting savoury. So good!
What advice would you give a maker who’s just starting out?
We always tell early entrepreneurs that it’s natural to be TERRIFIED, but if you give it every ounce of what you have to offer it will be successful.
What do you love most about being a maker?
Being able to make people smile when they eat something you have literally made with your own two hands is the most satisfying thing!
