We Heart Handmade: Wendi Whale

Her name is Wendi and she makes whales.

To be more specific, her name is Wendi Kuarsingh and she makes the most adorable, huggable, snuggly whale pillows.

It all began six years ago, when Wendi made her son a giant felt robot.

“That opened a whole can of creativity I didn’t know I had which led me here,” she says.

Before long, she was experimenting with whale pillows and eventually expanded her collection to include narwahl, jellyfish, octopi, elephants and more. Today, Wendi’s oh-so-cute creations are available on Etsy and in a handful of local shops. She’s also a regular at makers’ markets like Third + Bird and Scattered Seeds.

In the latest edition of We Heart Handmade, Wendi talks about being a maker, staying unique and more.

What sparked your decision and motivated you to start becoming a maker?

It’s been a long creative journey. Don’t want to age myself, but I’ve been creating for over 10 years now and feel like I’ve finally found my place. So if you have a dream, work hard, keep at it, and don’t quit.

What do you love most about what you make and being a maker?

How soft and squishy the whales are, and how they are received by people. The joy on our customers’ faces is priceless.

What’s the most difficult part about what you make?

It can become a little repetitive, but with hard work and determination I push past that. Plus I love what I do.

What advice would you give a maker who’s just starting out?

Keep at it, don’t give up. When you have a bad day, a bad month, a bad year, keep at it. Maybe rethink your game plan or reevaluate your work, but don’t give up. Also, don’t compare yourself to other makers. Stay unique to yourself.
