What's Up In WPG: Oct. 20-22

October 20 | Free Fallin: A Tribute to Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers | 7 p.m.

What better way to honour the late Tom Petty than covering his music? Local bands like The Noble Thiefs, SC Mira and more are gathering at Times Change(d) High & Lonesome Club to do just that. Last we heard, the event was sold out so hopefully you got your tickets!

October 20 + 21 | 24 Shows in 24 Hours ft. The Treble

From Oct. 20-21, local band The Treble will set out to play 24 shows in 24 hours in support of the Canadian Mental Health Association. Venues range from restaurants like A Little Pizza Heaven, Stella’s and Nuburger to public spaces like the Provencher Bridge and even a house party. Check the schedule or donate to the cause online.

October 20 + 21 | Fright at the Fort: Haunted Circus | 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.

The performers have fled, the ringmaster is missing and the animals are on the loose! Wander at your own risk through the macabre menagerie at Lower Fort Garry (but watch your back for eerie entertainers hiding in dark corners of the stone fort walls!). Tickets cost $13.60 and are available here (suitable for ages 16+).

October 21 + 22 | The Winnipeg Pet Show

Calling all pet lovers: The Winnipeg Pet Show is a weekend dedicated to people who love their fur babies. Featuring pet-related products, services and information for every type of critter, the event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday at the RBC Convention Centre. While visitors’ pets aren’t welcome, there will be plenty of animals on site – plus lots of treats to take home for your furry friends! For tickets and more information visit the Winnipeg Pet Show online.

All weekend | Winnipeg Improv Festival

Featuring performers from New York City, Montreal, Seattle, Victoria, Minneapolis, Regina, and Winnipeg, the city’s annual improv festival began this week and runs until Oct. 21. This weekend’s shows include a collaboration with the Winnipeg Writer’s Festival (Friday), a night of spooky (and hilarious) Ghost Stories (Saturday) and more. For the full schedule and details visit the Winnipeg Improv Festival online.

October 21 | Spooky Science | 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The University of Manitoba will be hosting their annual Spooky Science event. Featuring witches potions, fizzing eyeballs and more, it’s a fun (and free) Halloween event where children and youth get to participate in hands-on/minds-on science activities. Costumes welcome!

October 21 | Giant Photographic Garage Sale | 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Help find your old cameras, lenses, darkroom equipment and more a new home. Hosted by the Flash Photographic Festival, the Giant Photographic Garage Sale connects sellers and buyers at Rob Waddell’s vintage store at 68 1/2 Higgins Ave. If you’re not into photography, there’s also a ton of cool lamps, stereo equipment and more.

October 22 | World Borscht Championships

This Sunday, Little Brown Jug will host the inaugural World Borscht Championships. We’re talking simple beet borschts, non-traditional takes on borscht and everything in between. Best of all, all proceeds go to Siloam Mission.
