What's Up In WPG: Oct. 6-9

October 6 | Finch Gallery Workspace Grand Opening | 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

On Friday night, Finch Gallery Workspace (74 Princess St.) is hosting their Grand Opening as part of First Fridays in the Exchange. The event will feature a new exhibit, live painting by Josiah Koppanyi and music from Willem Pops.

October 6 | Goose Flight Feast at Fort Whyte | 5 p.m.

Enjoy a three-course dinner at the Buffalo Stone Café alongside lakeside views of the setting sun and thousands of migrating geese. Tickets cost $51.75 (adult) go for $28.75 (children under 12).

October 6 + 7 | Halloween Fun Zone at Shelmerdine | 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Halloween is still a few weeks away, but Shelmerdine is already getting in the spirit with their annual Halloween Fun Zone. The new amusement park features a train ride, bumper cars, bouncy castles, face painting and even a merry-go-round, so it’s the perfect place to take the kids while you stock up on Thanksgiving decor. General admission ranges from $5 to $7 and amusement park passes (which include four ride tickets) are $10. Proceeds go to local charities.

October 6 + 7 | Flash Photographic Festival 

Every October, Winnipeg’s annual photography festival showcases local photographers and features (free and paid) photography-related events around the city. On Friday night, Ian McCausland, Colin Corneau and others will debate the virtues and pitfalls of Film vs. Digital, while the West End BIZ is hosting a photographic bike tour of the West End on Saturday. October 6 + 7 | Sk8 Skates 30th Anniversary Weekend

Winnipeg’s most iconic local skate shop (and one of the longest-standing in Canada) is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a party at The Good Will on Friday night (tickets cost $5) followed by a skate competition at The Forks on Saturday afternoon (2 p.m. to 4 p.m.). October 7 | in Wonderland | 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Presented by Bounce Design, Chocolatier Constance Popp and La Belle Baguette, in Wonderland is a celebration of French Manitoba’s visionary chocolate and pastry artists. Set in a dreamscape inspired by Alice in Wonderland it will feature chocolate and pastry-inspired food, drinks, fashion (including chocolate dresses!), music and entertainment.

All weekend | WNDX Festival of Moving Image 

Founded in 2005, WNDX places special attention on the most innovative and ground-breaking work by film and and video artists from around the world, with a special focus on the work of Manitoba and prairie artists. This weekend’s lineup features works from Kent Monkman, the annual One Take Super 8 event and more. Check out the film listings here.
