A Nashville Hot Chicken Pop-Up is Coming to The Forks: Sept. 22-23

When one door closes, a pop-up chicken joint opens. At least that’s the case in Winnipeg this weekend.

On Sept. 22 and Sept. 23, The Downlow Chicken Shack will take over Muddy Waters in the heart of The Forks. Muddy Waters, which has become a popular eatery for tourists and locals alike over the past 20 years, will close its doors for the final time on Sept. 30.

But before that happens, the iconic BBQ joint is hosting an exclusive pop-up featuring Vancouver’s Nashville hot chicken joint, The Downlow Chicken Shack.

The Downlow Chicken Shack, which opened in Vancouver to rave reviews this June, is owned by Doug Stephen, son of Muddy Waters/Wow Hospitality Concept’s Doug Stephen.

“This is going to be an incredible reunion. I grew up learning about the food and restaurant industry from my dad. It’s definitely in my blood, and I’m so excited to be able to celebrate the success of Muddy Waters Eatery with him in my hometown and introduce Nashville Hot Chicken to the city. Who knows, maybe we’ll stay!” – Doug Stephen, The Downlow Chicken Shack

For the uninitiated, Nashville hot chicken ain’t your average fried chicken. It’s well-marinated, deep-fried and coated with a signature hot oil blend, and dusted with spices. The result is a crispy-on-the-outside-tender-on-the-inside treat for your mouth.

The pop-up menu will feature the aforementioned Nashville hot chicken (ranging in heat levels from mild to “A Side of Milk”), chicken-on-a-bun, wings, coleslaw, corn bread, pickles, macaroni salad, and fries. Prices start at $9.

“We’ve had such a great run here at The Forks, and I couldn’t be happier to end things on such a happy note as to have my son return for this anticipated pop-up. We hope to see lots of our guests, from past and present, come down to enjoy this special weekend with us.” – Doug Stephen, WOW Hospitality

The Downlow Chicken Shack pop-up will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. or until chicken runs out. It will be first-come, first-served.
