Chocolatier Constance Popp: A Contemporary Chocolate Heaven
Remember that scene from Willy Wonka when the kids enter the gigantic Oompa Loompa-filled workshop where everything from the river to the grass is made with delicious chocolate? Visiting Chocolatier Constance Popp is essentially the adult version of that experience, minus the Oompa Loompas. Seriously, there’s chocolate everywhere.
The St. Boniface boutique, which blessed the city with its opening in 2007, is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Winnipeg – and for good reason. Visitors from around the globe flock to the quaint and unpretentious shop to taste some of the award-winning creations like the premium artisan chocolates, cakes, gelato, frozen drinks, baked goods and unique chocolate showpieces – many of which are made with local ingredients. Cue the drool. One of the most notable out-of-towners to enjoy Constance Popp chocolates was none other than Queen Elizabeth, who indulged in specially made treats during her 2010 Manitoba visit. Ace!
As Manitoba’s first bean to bar maker, owner and chocolatier extraordinaire Constance Menzies has always been dedicated to using the most premium criollo beans from certified organic and fair trade plantations all over the world. The end result is luscious chocolate that’s good for you, and good for the planet.
As all dessert fiends know, the beauty of chocolate is that it can be enjoyed hot or cold. Constance took advantage of this and expanded her menu with special treats for any season. Her chocolate gelato was voted the Best in Winnipeg, making it the perfect summer treat. And if you’re in the area on a cool Saturday, we’d highly recommend warming up with their Yucatán-inspired chocolate shot, which is made with fair trade dark Belgian chocolate, almond milk, vanilla, sugar, cinnamon and chili pepper.
Whether she’s making her premium creations for Folkfest, the Juno Awards, or for certain Royals, Constance is happy doing it all. To her, creating chocolate treats is just as satisfying as eating it. She must be the happiest person in the world.
