White Star Diner: Classic Canadian Comfort Food For Any Craving

Eating healthy is great, but if you’re taking a break from calorie-counting you may as well make it worth it. A great place to start is the White Star Diner.

After operating as a four-seat takeout restaurant in the Exchange District for eight years, the White Star recently relocated to Kennedy Street and has become one of downtown’s most popular lunch spots for businessmen and labourers alike. No surprise, given the tasty food, friendly service, laidback atmosphere and surprisingly large menu.

In addition to serving up classic diner fare like burgers, dogs, poutines and homemade meatloaf, the White Star has an impressive sandwich selection including the popular pulled pork n’ slaw and some surprises like the Shrimp Po’Boy and the brie/blue cheese/bacon grilled cheese. No matter what you order, you’re sure leave satisfied and you’re sure to leave full.

But even though the White Star’s menu isn’t exactly diet-friendly, it doesn’t lack quality. All of the restaurant’s food is made from scratch, using only the freshest of ingredients and handpicked produce whenever possible. The diner also makes a point of serving only Canadian wines and Manitoba brews. As a small, family-run business with a few employees, supporting local and building community is as important to owner Bruce Smedts as serving up delicious food.

One of the restaurant’s biggest surprises – and biggest treats – is the massive “slimming and delicious” milkshake menu. In addition to the classic chocolate, vanilla and strawberry, they take things to the next level with combinations like chocolate root beer, peanut butter coffee, Nutella banana and black currant balsamic. But the best thing about the White Star’s shake selection is that it’s ever-growing; instead of replacing flavours on the menu, they simply add to it (the result is a list of 30 combinations and counting).

What people may not know about the White Star is that it’s not just a lunch joint. Open until 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, it’s a great place to grab a bite before a concert, a Jets game or a night on the town. And with the We Heart Winnipeg membership, you’ll save 20% on all orders (excluding alcohol) after 3 p.m.
