Fresh Local Fare: Your one-stop shop for food less traveled
Imagine a permanent indoor farmers’ market serving up fresh local produce year-round. In Winnipeg.
Thanks to Christina Dubuc and Nathan Steele, Fresh Local Fare is doing just that.
Located at 2145 Portage Ave., the shop evolved from My Farmers’ Market, Winnipeg’s first online retail grocery store. After building up a loyal customer base and a long list of local suppliers, a physical storefront was the next logical step.
Thanks to his experience working on farms and running his own restaurant, Nathan is well aware of industry inefficiencies and hopes the store will stimulate sustainability – both in Winnipeg and beyond. By setting up a permanent farmers’ market in an urban setting, Fresh Local Fare reduces waste, supports local producers, keeps money in the community and helps people eat better. It’s a win-win for everybody, with as few middlemen as possible.
To date, the store has developed relationships with more than 100 local producers. From pasture-raised poultry and locally-grown grains (including Portage la Prairie-grown Prairie Quinoa) to baked goods and hand-crafted condiments, they carry all the staples of a well-rounded diet along with a few pleasant surprises.
But their specialty is the produce. So, so much produce.
We’re talking the sweetest and juiciest fruits.
The freshest and crispest homegrown veg.
And the most aromatic herbs and greenest micro-greens.
For those worried about the winter months, fear not. Fresh Local Fare also works with indoor growers, so local options are available year-round. Any products that aren’t local, like bananas and some other fruits, are organic and as fresh as possible.
But don’t take our word for it. Skip the supermarket and head over to Fresh Local Fare for the best food our province has to offer.
To show their love for our city, Fresh Local Fare also gives We Heart Winnipeg cardholders $10 off all in-store purchases of $60 or more. Cards are available online or at the till for $10 (and never expire!).
