Habanero Sombrero: A flavour fiesta with all the fixings
If you feel like some authentic Mexican food but aren’t in the market for a trip down South, there’s always Habanero Sombrero. Serving up some of the city’s best tacos and salsas, the popular food truck can usually be found on Broadway.
“If you want to feel like you’re on vacation, stop on by,” says Mark Langtry, who owns and operates the mobile taqueria with his wife, Shannon. “We’ve got the classic Mexican food, the music, the whole deal.”
The idea for bringing traditional Mexican fare to The Peg was inspired by the couple’s many trips to California, where they could find Latin food at every corner. In providing something new and unique, it was important they made their food as authentic as possible. That’s why you’ll never see ground beef or a hard shell. Plus, they make their own salsas and guacamole in-house. It’s the real deal.
The menu is simple and straightforward, highlighted by four types of tacos: Barbacoa (slow-roasted beef marinated with a special house rub), Carnitas (slow-roasted pork prepared in a traditional Cochinita Pibil style), Pollo (perfectly seasoned shredded chicken) and Frijoles De Negro (fresh black beans simmered with onion, garlic and a secret mix of seasoning).
To be honest, the assortment of salsas alone are worth a visit. From the salsa fresca and the salsa verde to the pineapple tomatillo salsa and the habanero salsa, they use only the freshest ingredients and offer levels of spice for every taste bud.
The specials, which include various combinations of tacos, chips, salsa, guacamole and a drink, range from $10 to $15. The decadent spicy double chocolate chip Aye Carumba cookie is also worth a try, whether for dessert or a tasty mid-afternoon snack.
Habanero Sombrero also has a lot of love for shopping small and supporting local, so they offer We Heart Winnipeg members $1 off the Daily Special. Gracias amigos!
