Shelmerdine: Not your garden variety garden centre
It may be situated on the outskirts of the city, but Shelmerdine is so worth the drive. The very fact that they’ve been family owned and operated since 1937 (yes, that’s 80 years!) tells you that they must be doing something right.
But although they’ve built their reputation providing the finest in flowers and plants, the company is no longer a garden centre so much as a lifestyle centre. In addition to serving all of your horticultural needs, they carry an extensive selection of decor, pottery, furniture, food and even clothes. In fact, the fashion boutique has become one of the store’s best-kept secrets, carrying quality designer labels and receiving regular shipments of the latest trends.
But don’t worry: they are still the go-to place for all things gardening. From annuals and perennials to succulents and poinsettias, they’ve got you covered. The huge onsite nursery provides a huge selection and the seasonal nature of the store ensures the inventory changes regularly to keep you coming back.
Shelmerdine has also made a visit to the store about so much more than shopping. Aside from soaking up the amazing sights and smells (so many flowers!), you can grab a coffee and a snack (and gelato!) at the full-service in-store cafe. They also host a series of popular family-friendly events like summer markets, gardening seminars, hay mazes and kids club.
While Shelmerdine is a fantastic place to spend some time with family or a group of girlfriends, make sure you give yourself plenty of time: you could easily pop in for a plant and end up staying an hour. And if you’re at the lake on the weekend, not to worry. They’re open until 8 p.m. on Thursdays, and will even give We Heart Winnipeg members 15% off* for making the trip.
*Discount available between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. every Thursday (up to $500). Cannot be combined with any other coupons/discounts. Sale and clearance items excluded.
