The Village Pet: Serving fur babies in Osborne and beyond
Nobody loves your fur baby as much as you do, but The Village Pet comes close.
Located in the bright orange building near Confusion Corner, the shop has built a large and loyal community of customers (and friends) from not only the Village but surrounding areas as well. No surprise, given the friendly service and helpful advice from owners Derek and Amanda Palson. In a neighbourhood of so many people with not so many cars, it also doesn’t hurt that they deliver.
From the moment you step through the front door, it’s clear that The Village Pet isn’t your typical pet store. You’ll likely be greeted with a smile from Derek himself, along with a welcome dose of affection from the resident cat, Ira. Instead of asking what you want, the staff will ask how you’re doing. They’ll determine your needs, answer any questions you have and tell you straight up if they don’t know something (and refer you to someone who does).
And don’t expect any sales pitches. Since opening in 2014, the shop has built its reputation and gained the community’s trust by valuing relationships over profits and creating a culture of honesty and transparency.
Unlike chain stores, The Village Pet’s product selection is highly curated, making for a simpler and quicker shopping experience. But unlike some speciality shops, limited selection doesn’t mean higher prices – from food to toys, they have options at every price point and for every budget.
At the end of the day, it comes down to the shop’s commitment to quality over quantity. Especially when it comes to the food they carry, which is primarily natural, holistic and Canadian-made.
As Derek says: “We don’t sell anything we wouldn’t give our own pets.” (Of which he has four.)
As passionate as the Palsons are about pets, they care even more about their neighbourhood. Setting up shop in the Village was a conscious decision and one that has transformed and connected the community. It’s one of the reasons they give We Heart Winnipeg members 25% off all purchases.*
But don’t take our word for it: whether you live in Osborne or find yourself in the area, pop by the big orange building with the puppy in the window and say hello. You won’t regret it.
